Stairways are always an exciting challenge for me. Whether it's designing one from scratch, fitting one into a certain space or rebuilding an existing stairway, they are almost always complicated, with lots of interesting elements. I've built curved and winding stairways, contemporary designs that showcase art work, and ship's ladders.
One of my most unusual stairway jobs was designing and building a stairway leading up to a small tower loft with a window seat and a panoramic view. To avoid short, shin-knocking treads in the extremely small space, I created an alternating tread stairway with normal width treads. Another unusual job involved creating a curved ceiling to mimic the turn of a winding stairway.
